4 Carpet-Cleaning Secrets From the Pros

Carpeting is still incredibly popular even though there are many different types of residential flooring options now, including laminate, bamboo, tile, vinyl, wood, stone, and cork. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the carpet sector in the U.S. really represents around 51% of the entire flooring market, which generated over $10 billion in revenue in 2019 alone.

In addition to being cosy and soft, carpeting is popular because it requires less upkeep and maintenance than hard flooring. The only real maintenance needed to keep carpet looking new and fresh is routine vacuuming and the occasional deep-clean scrubbing.

Nevertheless, despite your best efforts, spills, splatters, messy mishaps, and whatever you track in on the bottom of your shoes will eventually ruin your carpet. Owner of Best Carpet Cleaning Experts in San Antonio, Texas, Mark Tarbox guides us through the procedure while sharing insights gained over 30 years in the industry to help us understand how carpet experts address these issues.

Pro Tip 1: Blot Stains, Don’t Rub Them!

Instead, use a clean cloth, paper towel, or sponge to gently dab stains with a cleaning solution. Blotting is essential. Blotting applies light pressure on the stain to enable soaking, said Tarbox. Rubbing forces the particles into the fibres, which may cause those fibres to prematurely break down.

Blotting outward can cause the stain to spread deeper across the carpet, so always blot from the stain’s outer edge inward toward the centre.

Pro Tip 2: Club Soda and Vinegar are Your Helpers

You may have heard that club soda may be used to properly utilise to remove beer and wine stains from carpeting.

First, dash the stain with a clean cloth after addition club soda to it. Repeat the process with more club soda if the stain seems lighter. If it doesn’t work, combine white vinegar and water in a 1:1 ratio and pour the mixture into a portable spray bottle. Spray the remedy on the stain and allow it to sit for 10 to 15 minutes to absorb. Then, apply pressure with a clean, dry sponge to the wet area to absorb both the cleaning solution and the diluted stain, advises Tarbox. If necessary, carry out this procedure once more to completely remove the discoloration.

Pro Tip 3: Try Shaving Cream

Believe it or not, according to Tarbox, regular shaving cream works best for removing general stains from carpets. It will practically eliminate any stain. For roughly 30 minutes, directly apply the shaving cream to the discoloration, advises Tarbox. Blot the shaving cream with a dry white linen when it has dried. White vinegar and water mixed 50/50 should be sprayed over the area to finish, and the solution should be wiped away with a cloth.

Pro Tip 4: Dish Soap Cuts Grease

The trick, once again, is to use the right product and procedure for cleaning up greasy spills on carpeting: Pour a few drops of a dish soap that cuts through grease, like Dawn, into a cup of warm water. To dissolve the soap, gently stir the solution.

The greasy stain should be soaked by spraying the solution onto it, advises Tarbox. Then use paper towels or a white cloth to dab it up. You might need to repeat this procedure more than once, depending on the size and age of the stain.
